Closed Source vs Open Source Phone Software

apple-logo1.jpgThe mobile phone operating system game is really heating up. Apple's iPhone software is amazing. However its closed source meaning if you want to write an application for it you have to jump through many hoops and Apple can always say 'No'. Thats that. Apple's closed source operating system means you will never see that software on another phone not made or authorized by Apple.

Google's Android operating system however is totally open source. Meaning the source code is open and available for everyone and its totally free. This is much better for developers. Want to have your application in the Google Android Market? Submit it to Google, they may say no and not include it. However if they do you can still install it on your phone. This is the major difference between closed and open source phone operating systems.

Google and Apple both approve their applications before they hit the market to be sure they are legit and not viruses. The big deal of course is that if Apple says no, you have absolutely no options left. Android however you can just plug it into your computer and you are good to go.
